starI hope everyone is enjoying Iowa's smokefree venues and that you are patronizing your local establishments and telling them how much you enjoy the clean air.  However, we still have work to do.

Click here for the public hearings that will be taking place regarding the smokefree law. It’s imperative that we are at every meeting. The meetings are over ICN, so we just need one or two people at one of the sites representing CAFE. They are more than a month away, but we need to confirm that someone will be at each site.  Please rsvp to Eileen@cafeiowacan.org if you can attend any of these sessions.  The meetings need a strong and supportive crowd!

On Tuesday, April 15th, 2008, Governor Chet Culver signed House File 2212 – the Smoke Free Air Act -- into law, making Iowa the 14th state in the nation to pass a statewide smoking ban that includes restaurants, bars and workplaces.

“My goal is to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation, which is why I am proud to sign the Smoke Free Air Act,” said Governor Culver.  Read complete press release from Governor's office

Our mission is to reduce tobacco-related death and disease. CAFE IOWA CAN urges the Iowa legislature to take action on the 3 most effective ways to reduce tobacco use:

(Done! see story below
)

checkmark graphicRestore local control so cities and counties can pass smoke-free ordinance

The tobacco industry vigorously opposes local control for a number of reasons:

  • Increased awareness about the dangers of tobacco and secondhand smoke leads to more people quitting.
  • When protections against secondhand smoke are in place and more public places are smoke-free, people smoke fewer cigarettes.
  • As smoking becomes less socially acceptable, fewer children will choose to smoke, further diminishing Big Tobacco’s profits.
