Our mission is to reduce tobacco-related death and disease. CAFE IOWA
CAN urges the Iowa legislature to take action on the 3 most effective
ways to reduce tobacco use:
Pass a $1 increase in the tobacco tax
(Done! see story below)
Restore local control so cities and counties can pass smoke-free
ordinance
- Fund a comprehensive tobacco prevention program at the CDC recommended
minimum.
The tobacco industry vigorously opposes local
control for a number of reasons:
- Increased awareness about the dangers of tobacco and secondhand
smoke leads to more people quitting.
- When protections against secondhand smoke are in place
and more public places are smoke-free, people smoke fewer
cigarettes.
- As smoking becomes less socially acceptable, fewer children
will choose to smoke, further diminishing Big Tobacco’s
profits.
